Recycling, Organics & Garbage

All households in Uptown receive a weekly blue box and green bin collection, while garbage is collected every other week.

There is a fee for every bag of garbage picked up curbside or dropped off at a waste facility. This system encourages people to practice the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) and gives them some control over how much they want to spend on their garbage each week.

Garbage Collection

Curbside collection is provided in the urban areas of Uptown. Garbage & Recycling collection day in Uptown is Tuesday.

User pay bags are required in order to receive curb/roadside garbage collection. The yellow bags are sold in packages of 10. Large bags are $20.00 per package ($2.00each) and small bags are $15 per package ($1.50 each). Yellow user pay bags can be purchased from the following locations:

Recycling Collection

Uptown's blue box program (no charge) is provided through a curbside collection in urban areas, and through designated drop-off bins at all landfill sites and transfer stations.

Each household is entitled to two blue boxes at no charge. Blue boxes may be picked up at any County landfill site or transfer station, or at our municipal office.

Organics Collection

"Organic waste" refers to all food waste, some paper items, and small quantities of other organic items (e.g. indoor plants). The Green Bin Organics programme is a programme offered by Uptown that will have organic waste collected from your home or business, diverted from landfill, and turned into compost. 

Waste Facilities

Transfer stations accept small loads of waste and landfills handle both small and large loads of waste. Uptown waste facilities provide a range of services including: garbage disposal, blue box recycling (no charge), scrap metal recycling, wood/brush chipping, large appliance recycling, tire recycling, and selected household hazardous waste drop-off for motor oil and oil filters, antifreeze, automotive and household batteries, propane cylinders and aerosol cans (no charge and limits apply).
